PhotoTrek explores the connection between travel and photography. I’ve been fortunate to have traveled to some beautiful and interesting places. In 2004-05 I backpacked around the world visiting about 13 countries. When I returned I made the transition to digital and learned the basics of Photoshop.
In 2006 I was able to drive around the Southwest U.S. for about 2 weeks. Earlier this year I made a 1 week trip to Oaxaca, Mexico. Each outing sharpens my skills and takes me deeper in the medium.
As one travel writer put it, traveling is living in a state of ‘heightened awareness’. This makes perfect sense since everything is new and most likely unusual if not outright strange. Moving through this kind of environment cannot help but put your senses on high alert. As a result I find that my creative impulses recieve a jolt. Making pictures this way is a pleasure. I am able to see numerous creative options and I’m enthused and energized.
I make photos when I’m not traveling as well, of course. But I find that these ‘home-grown’ efforts also benefit from my travels. The fresh ways of seeing that are prompted while away from home carry over, thankfully. It all adds up and makes photography a joy and a great form of self-expression.
